This began as an exploration of what it takes to create a planet-friendly functional object. Turns out they are not so planet-friendly in many regards. I have written “a whole dissertation” examining why that is the case even though they are, at the very least, hand knit using natural fibers only. I did improve upon the lack of ecological kindness by knitting a batch with color-grown cotton and natural colored linen and hemp yarns; in other words, no dyes used, which can be a particularly offensive process to the environment. Undyed yarns make so much more sense for an object whose colors will only fade with use anyway. The initial bunch shown here now exist primarily as an exploration of color.
